Monte Rosa

Useful information

Alagna Valsesia is a comune and small village high in the Valsesia Alpine valley in the province of Vercelli, Piedmont, northern Italy, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2013.

It is a tourist destination for mountaineering and winter sports, and is internationally renowned for its off-piste skiing. It is also the traditional starting point for the ascent of the Margherita hut, which at 4,554 metres above sea level is the highest building in Europe. It was originally settled by the Walser in the early 12th century. It is located at an altitude of 1,191 metres south of Monte Rosa, at 4,638 metres above sea level (the second highest peak in the Alps); it is very close to Milan (130 kilometres) and the Milan-Malpensa International Airport (106 kilometres).

Since December 2005, a cable car has connected Alagna to Gressoney (AO) via the Passo dei Salati.

Alagna Monterosa
Unlike the resorts in the Dolomites, northeast of Milan, Monterosa is not known for its glamour, but the real treasure lies in the mountains and on the slopes of the beautiful Celca. Some of the best require some effort - an hour and a half walk from the top of the Salati Pass gondola to Zube, from where you can descend to the village of Alagna in complete peace. The gondola to Punto Indren takes us to just under 3300 meters, from where numerous slopes also wind their way to Alagna or the Gressoney valley. Champoluc also has plenty of terrain for ski touring. It is also famous for its longest heli-skiing descent.
